DIRECT SPEECH AND INDIRECT SPEECH

 

Direct speech (kalimat langsung) adalah kalimat yang diucapkan langsung oleh pihak pertama (yang berbicara) kepada pihak kedua (lawan bicara). Bila ditulis didalam suatu naskah tulisan, maka harus diberikan tanda kutip “…..”

Indirect speech (kalimat tidak langsung) adalah ucapan pihak pertama dan pihak kedua yang disampaikan kembali oleh pihak ketiga kepada lawan bicaranya, sehingga disebut juga kalimat laporan (reported speech).

 

Below are the samples of Direct and Indirect speech.

Imperative	Ogi: "Please, turn off the lamp!" Edi: "Ok, I will."	Ogi asked Edi to turnoff the lamp.
	Lia: "Don't come late, please!" Mia: "I'll try"	Lia told Mia not to come late.
Interrogative	Sam: "Are you a new student?" Don: "Oh yes."	Sam asked Don whether he was a new student.
	Yudi: "Do you love Gio?" Yuli: "Certainly, he loves me too."	Yudi asked Yuli if she loved Gio.
Question Word	Boy: "Where do you live?" Mae: "I live in Alinda, North Bekasi."	Boy asked Mae where she lived.
	Tom: "When did you go to Semarang?" Ika: "Last week."	Tom asked Ika when she had gone to Semarang

If we want to change Direct Speech into Indirect Speech, so there will be some changes in tenses. Let's see
